Farm Security Cameras for Agricultural Sites: Long Range, Solar and Cold

An installer's spec for farm security cameras: long-range PTZ and varifocal bullets, reaching barns without power or network, cold and dust ratings per SKU, EW deterrence on equipment yards and a 200-acre schedule.

By Anabon Security Inc. — Technical Support · 9 min read · For installers, integrators and dealers

Quick answer: Farm security cameras are a distance, power and weather problem before they are a camera problem. Put a long-range PTZ with Auto Tracking on the tallest structure in the yard, varifocal bullets on the lane and gates, EW deterrence turrets on the equipment yard and fuel tanks, and a cold-rated dome on the shop door. Where a barn or gate has no power or network, use Extend Mode PoE, fiber, or a compact solar tower quoted per project with a 4G/LTE router. Choose SKUs by their printed operating range: −40 °F (−40 °C) sites get −40 °F (−40 °C) cameras.

Distance: which camera reaches across a 500 ft (150 m) yard and down the lane?

A 200-acre (81 ha) parcel is roughly 2,950 ft (900 m) on a side, but the camera job is smaller than the property. The yard cluster of shop, machine shed, bins, fuel and chemical storage usually sits inside a 300–500 ft (90–150 m) circle; the fields are not a camera job, the lane and the gates into them are.

The CS-P48 63X is the reach: 4MP, motorized 5.7–359 mm lens (63X), IR to 984 ft (300 m), Auto Tracking, a built-in speaker, alarm I/O 8/2, IP66 with TVS 6000V lightning protection, and a laser the catalog describes as an optional, visible beam designed to be eye-safe, reaching up to 1,640 ft (500 m). Mount it on the shop gable or a pole at 25–30 ft (7.6–9 m) with a clear line to the lane, the yard and the bins. Its power row is DC36V or PoE++ (IEEE 802.3bt); the catalog’s PoE switches are 802.3af/at at 30 W per port, so the PTZ gets its own power supply or a bt-class injector. Read the IR figure correctly: 984 ft (300 m) is the illuminator’s reach, not an identification distance (see IR Range Explained). The PTZ sees that a vehicle is at the far gate at 2 a.m. and follows it; the lane camera does the identifying.

For the lane and the gates, the CS-I4US L-2.8-12mm: 4MP Value Series bullet, motorized 2.8–12 mm lens, IR to 262 ft (80 m), TWDR, IP67, Metal + Plastic housing, Smart Alarm (Human and Vehicle Detection) in its AI row. Set the lens tight on the gate from 150–250 ft (45–75 m) so the vehicle fills the frame; the motorized zoom does that from the ground after the pole is up.

No power, no network: how do you reach the far barn and the field gate?

The shop has power and a router; the far barn has a light switch; the field gate has nothing.

Distance from the head end Method CASE element (as printed)
Under 328 ft (100 m) Cat6 and PoE from the NVR or switch Any PoE port; CS-N110 P8H-AI prints 8 PoE ports
328–820 ft (100–250 m), one building Extend Mode PoE on a dedicated switch in the shop CS-H1108PLS: 8 PoE ports, 328 ft (100 m) standard / 820 ft (250 m) in Extend Mode, 100W budget
Any distance, buildings with conduit Single-mode fiber between buildings, PoE switch at each end CS-POE33024PF: 24 Gigabit PoE ports, 2×1000M SFP fiber uplinks, 400W or 600W budget
No power at all Compact solar tower with a 4G/LTE router, quoted per project CSP-S2560H4L: 1×450W bifacial panel, LFP 2560Wh, 11.5 ft (3.5 m) mast, 72 hours on 28W

Extend Mode typically trades link speed for distance (confirm on the spec sheet), which suits one or two cameras but not a PTZ main stream. Fiber is the answer wherever conduit already runs between buildings, terminated on the CS-POE33024PF’s SFP uplinks. The distance rules are in PoE Max Distance and PoE Extenders.

The CSP-S2560H4L is a CASE Project Series item: availability, lead time, certificates and the warranty term are confirmed in writing per project before you promise any of them. Its printed rows set the design limits: no AC charger, so no generator top-up; a galvanized base with two forklift holes and four lifting rings, 794 lb (360 kg); PoE, a 4G router, an NVR and cameras listed as optional accessories; and no operating temperature row, which on a northern farm is the first line to confirm in writing. Add up the nameplate draw of camera, router and recorder against the printed 28 W, and check the carrier’s signal at the gate before you quote a router. Project quoting is explained in the CASE Project Series overview.

Cold and dust: which printed ratings matter on a farm?

SKU Operating range (as printed) Protection (as printed) Farm position
CS-I5PS S-2.8mm −40 to 149 °F (−40 to 65 °C) IP66, IK08 Shop and office doors, exposed
CS-P48 63X −40 to 158 °F (−40 to 70 °C) IR off; −40 to 104 °F (−40 to 40 °C) IR on IP66, TVS 6000V Yard overwatch on the gable or pole
CS-I4US L-2.8-12mm −22 to 140 °F (−30 to 60 °C) IP67 Lane and gates; under an eave in −40 regions
CS-I8XQ II-2.8mm Not printed; confirm on the spec sheet IP66 Equipment yard and fuel tanks

In the northern Plains and the Prairies the difference between −22 °F (−30 °C) and −40 °F (−40 °C) is a real night in January, so exposed positions get the −40 SKUs and the Value bullet goes under an eave. The first digit of the IP code is dust: IP6X means dust-tight, which IP66 and IP67 both give you, and that is what matters at harvest. Inside a livestock barn the problem is humidity and ammonia; corrosion resistance is not printed, so mount outside the pens and put a rinse into the service schedule. Electrical work in agricultural buildings falls under NEC Article 547 (in Canada, CEC Section 22 covers wet and corrosive locations such as livestock barns; verify the local code). Winter practice is in Security Cameras for Cold Weather.

Equipment yards and fuel: what does deterrence change when the sheriff is 40 minutes away?

Rural response time is the constraint nobody writes on the drawing. A camera that only records tells you on Monday what left on Saturday; a camera that answers a person with light and a voice message as they step off the lane changes what happens next.

The CS-I8XQ II-2.8mm: 8MP, IR to 164 ft (50 m), white light to 98 ft (30 m), red and blue light, built-in mic and speaker, a 1 TB memory slot, IP66, metal housing. Its AI row prints Human / Vehicle / Non-motor Vehicle / Pet Classification (Dog, Cat), the row that matters on a farm: the response can be set to trigger on people and vehicles rather than on any motion; confirm the trigger behavior per firmware and test it on site. With a microSD card in the slot (up to 1 TB as printed), the camera can keep an edge copy when a cellular link drops, where edge recording is configured. EW and AEW are deterrence features. Availability is confirmed per SKU. The laser is a deterrent, not an illuminator, and is offered on selected models only.

  • Fuel tanks and the chemical shed: one EW turret each, zone drawn on the fill point and the door.
  • Equipment row: one EW turret per 100 ft (30 m) of parked machinery, looking along the row so a person walking the line crosses the zone.
  • Schedule: arm light and voice only when the yard is closed; harvest nights run late, so the operator owns the calendar.

Say what deterrence does, not what it prevents: an intervention at the moment of approach and a usable clip afterwards. Background is in Active Deterrence Cameras: EW/AEW.

Sample schedule: a 200-acre (81 ha) grain and livestock operation

A yard with a shop, a machine shed, grain bins, fuel tanks and a chemical shed, one gated lane, and an equipment yard 1,200 ft (365 m) out with no power: nine cameras on one NVR plus a project-quoted solar tower.

ID Position CASE SKU Mount and height What it must show
C01 Shop gable, yard overwatch CS-P48 63X Gable, 28 ft (8.5 m), own power supply Lane, yard and bins; Auto Tracking on vehicles
C02–C03 Main gate, inbound and outbound CS-I4US L-2.8-12mm One pole, 14 ft (4.3 m), lenses tight on the gate Vehicle front and rear, plate a person can read
C04 Shop door and office CS-I5PS S-2.8mm Soffit, 8 ft (2.4 m) Face of everyone entering
C05 Machine shed door CS-I5PS S-2.8mm Eave, 10 ft (3 m) Door and the first bay
C06 Fuel tanks CS-I8XQ II-2.8mm Pole, 12 ft (3.7 m) Fill points; EW after hours
C07 Chemical shed and bin pad CS-I8XQ II-2.8mm Shed corner, 11 ft (3.4 m) Door, pad and auger area; EW
C08–C09 Remote equipment yard CS-I8XQ II-2.8mm CSP-S2560H4L mast, 11.5 ft (3.5 m), per project Both ends of the equipment row; EW; 1 TB local recording
NVR Shop office, locked cabinet CS-N110 P8H-AI Shelf 10 channels, 8 PoE ports; C01 on its own PSU

The CS-N110 P8H-AI prints 10 channels, 8 PoE ports and 100 Mbps incoming / 80 Mbps outgoing. C01 to C07 occupy seven of the eight PoE ports (C01 on its own power supply); the two remote cameras reach the NVR over the 4G/LTE link as channels eight and nine, so confirm the cellular plan against their streams. Remote viewing runs through CASE Connect; app features and remote access options are confirmed by model, software version and project configuration.

What to tell your customer

“The yard camera on the shop sees the whole lane and follows any vehicle automatically; the gate cameras record a plate a person can read; the fuel tanks, chemical shed and equipment yard answer anyone who approaches after hours with light and a voice message. Every exposed camera is chosen for this region’s temperatures from its printed range or, where none is printed, its spec sheet, and the remote yard runs on a solar tower we quote and confirm in writing. CASE cameras and CASE NVRs carry a 6-year warranty and CASE PTZ cameras carry a 3-year warranty; support comes through us.”

FAQ

How far can a farm camera actually see at night?

The CS-P48 63X prints IR to 984 ft (300 m) and the CS-I4US L-2.8-12mm IR to 262 ft (80 m). Those are illuminator distances, not identification distances; identification depends on zoom and pixels on the target. The PTZ detects and follows, while a tightly set lane camera identifies.

How do I get a camera to a barn 600 ft (183 m) from the shop?

Three options in order of preference: single-mode fiber if conduit exists, terminated on the CS-POE33024PF’s SFP uplinks; a CS-H1108PLS in Extend Mode, printed at 820 ft (250 m), for one or two cameras; or a point-to-point wireless bridge sourced per project. If the barn has no power at all, quote the CSP-S2560H4L solar tower per project.

Which CASE cameras are rated for −40 °F (−40 °C)?

Among the SKUs in this article, the CS-I5PS S-2.8mm prints −40 to 149 °F (−40 to 65 °C) and the CS-P48 63X prints −40 to 158 °F (−40 to 70 °C) with IR off. The CS-I4US L-2.8-12mm prints −22 °F (−30 °C) as its lower limit, so in a −40 region it goes under an eave. No range is printed for the CS-I8XQ II-2.8mm; check its spec sheet.

Will the cameras stop equipment theft?

No camera system can be promised to stop theft, and you should not write that. The EW turrets detect a person or vehicle, answer with light and a voice message at the moment of approach, and record a clip with human and vehicle classification that the sheriff or RCMP can use. Deterrence is an intervention, not a promised outcome.
